What

What does the tour involve?

Stonehenge, the enigmatic circle of upright stones in the middle of the English countryside, dates back over 5,000 years. We are beginning to understand more and more as to how it was built, and what it was built for. This tour is often paired with Windsor Castle or with Bath, for a full (if long!) day trip outside of London. It is two hours away from the capital by car or coach..

Where

What will I see?

  • The whole hinterland of the Salisbury plain. You pass ancient barrows and burial mounds from centuries ago on the shuttle bus to The Stones..
  • A huge half completed circle of massive 50 tonne sarsen stones and 5 tonne bluestones, which originate from South Wales, over 200 miles away.
  • The Avenue – the ancient processional route which leads up to the Stones.
  • The places where the midwinter and midsummer suns align.
  • The exhibition in the Visitor Centre tells us more about the people who built Stonehenge and the possible reasons why.
  • The Bronze Age village recreation which puts into the context the lifestyles of people 5,000 years ago.
