We took media agency, December 19, on a walk around their Clerkenwell office. Medieval nuns, public art and Suffragettes all mixed in with London, s history. Oh, and we ended up in the pub where Marx met Lenin.

What

WHAT’S ON THE TOUR?

There are many themed days throughout the calendar year. There is a Black History month, Pride rises in June. Companies sometimes run other educational programmes to communicate the values the company holds on these important issues.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, GC has dozens of walks that tell the HERstory of women in our capital city. All our stories are location based and bespoke to you and your team.

December 19 wanted to find out about the women that had links with their own office neighbourhood. So, we led a 90-minute walk around Clerkenwell. The tour explains why Clerkenwell is where it is, it past its present, and stories that explains its past and present form.

We are talking for around 45 minutes of the tour. The group is encouraged to mingle, chat and enjoy parts of their neighbourhood they may never have seen, or walked past and never understood its significance.

On this walk we met the nuns who founded a convent here (garden fragments still remain), the Suffragettes made an appearance, and some beautiful and moving public art brough the walk alive.

‘Mother’s Ruin# – gin – inevitably introduced herself, and Bex, our Guide, gave fun facts about London’s favourite tipple. The Walks are all entertaining, as well as educational.

Where

WHAT DID WE SEE?

  • One of two ancient Clerkenwell prisons, where the antics of 17th Century tearaway Moll Cutpurse are legendary.
  • The site of one of London’s first ‘Gin Alley’
  • The places where Eleanor Marx and Emeline Pankhurst railed against the patriarchy.
  • An ancient graveyard hosting wonders of nature. Where a Bee Hotel and a heart-rending piece of public art sit side by side
  • A meat market for 900 years Smithfield also has a darker side. Riots, public execution and the suppression of women
  • An 800-year-old house used as a film set and a place where women helped the medieval sick.
  • One of London’s most ancient gateways, and an Order which still lives on in modern day society.

Plus, many more fun facts, and some fun role play for our Guests.
