Technically a palace – well it was in the 13th Century – but really is London’s castle, built at the time of the Norman Invasion in 1066. In its time it has been more than a Palace. It has been a Prison, a Zoo, a Mint, and a place of public execution. It still dominates the riverside, just next to the almost equally-iconic Tower Bridge. It is a barracks for Guards, and home to the Beefeaters, the King’s ceremonial bodyguard. Most famously, it houses the incomparable Crown Jewels, recently used in the coronation of King Charles III.
